Who has the most HD? (Hint, it’s not Comcast) – UPDATED

Posted by lozenp on February 6, 2008

Update Fed. 8I must have been on to something with this post, check out today’s post from the HDTV Almanac. I also added one to the number of channels on Direct TV to 44 based on some feedback and further checking.

The good people at Engadget HD posed the question today “Who has the most HD channels?“. That got me thinking about my situation here at the compound in Milan. Comcast has blessed us with a pretty good selection of channels, including several new ones in the past few months, but despite the claims of its advertising to have the most HD, I have to disagree, at least from how I look at things.

While the providers will trumpet VOD, pay channels, sports tiers and other premium packages, I like to look at it from the eyes of Joe customer, who doesn’t go beyond the basic HD package. What is that person likely to see?

Using the list Engadget HD put together as a guide, I compared the basic HD packages for five providers: My local Comcast service, DirectTV, Dish Network, AT&T U-Verse and Verizon FiOS. Here’s the breakdown:

Direct TV – 44
Dish Network – 34
U Verse – 22
Comcast – 20
Fios – 15

This removes all the broadcast channels (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, CW and any other locals), regional sports networks (FSN HD Detroit in my case), premium pay channels (HBO, Starz, etc.), sports tier channels (NFL Network, NBA Network, etc.) and any video on demand channels.

Based on this decidedly unscientific research, it seems like DirectTV has the most “basic” HD channels out there. Hit the read more link below to see the full breakdown. Drop me a comment if you have any of these packages and let me know if I’m missing anything, and how much you pay. If currently pay $55/month for Comcast with a HD DVR, although this is promotional pricing bundling phone and internet ($140/month total for all services including two phone lines).

Hey Phil – as far as I could tell, A&TT U-verse is not available to us in Milan… availability check at https://uverse1.att.com/un/unserviceableAdrSwitchingAction.do

You’re right, we can’t get it. However, Ypsilanti does have it. My friend Don is a subscriber (although he’s not at all impressed with it and will likely switch back when his rebates come through).

I realize this is from a while back but maybe you could use another update. I work for DISH Network and they are the lead provider of HD channels right now. DISH offers more HD than anyone in the industry and is the only provider to offer the lowest prices with HD Free for Life.
